This study finds that in the Ananthapur district of Andhra Pradesh, tanks were a precarious source of irrigation, even at the peak of their use. Hence, with the use of electricity supply and reduction in the cost of groundwater extraction technology, farmers moved to groundwater irrigation. Along with a rise in groundwater irrigation, however, a steady decline in tank irrigated area was witnessed.This is why, the US$100 million World Bank sponsored Karnataka Community Based Tank Management Project, for example, significantly stresses on the role of the community in two of the three project components: 1) undertaking tank ... the community-based tank rehabilitation project is that the communities were managing the tanks in the past and, that restoring the control of the community over the tanks would lead to their continued maintenance (personal communication with Mr.
